    I had this error: /var/cache/apt/archives/kodi_2%3a17.6+git20171114.2125-final-0xenial_all.deb

The error mentioned something about cleaning out unnecessary packages.

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
    fonts-roboto fonts-roboto-hinted kodi-data libjs-iscroll libsdl2-2.0-0 libsndio6.1
Use ‘sudo apt autoremove’ to remove them.
    Suggested packages:
    kodi-pvr-mythtv kodi-pvr-vuplus kodi-pvr-vdr-vnsi kodi-pvr-njoy kodi-pvr-nextpvr kodi-pvr-mediaportal-tvserver
    kodi-pvr-tvheadend-hts kodi-pvr-dvbviewer kodi-pvr-argustv kodi-pvr-iptvsimple kodi-audioencoder-vorbis
    kodi-audioencoder-flac kodi-audioencoder-lame

I ran sudo apt autoremove and the following happened:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
    fonts-roboto fonts-roboto-hinted kodi-bin kodi-data libcec4 libcrossguid1 libcurl3 libjs-iscroll libmicrohttpd10
    libmysqlclient20 libnfs8 libp8-platform2 libpcrecpp0v5 libsdl2-2.0-0 libshairplay0 libsndio6.1 libssh-4 libtinyxml2.6.2v5
    libvdpau1 mysql-common python-bluez python-simplejson

Finally I re-ran sudo apt-get install kodi and it worked!

      THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was having the same problem. I used the various procedures listed on other sites, but always received a broken pipe error. Autoremove in terminal never touched the “fonts-roboto” until i “sudo apt remove fonts-roboto”. Once I did that, Kodi installed without a hitch.
